GAME AWARDS 2002-2003
This year's award winners have been selected from a total of 715 separate titles chosen through a vote conducted over the Internet and by mail between July 20 and September 24 this year. The CESA GAME AWARDS Selection Committee was responsible for the final decisions regarding the allocation of each award.

Award for Excellence

"Awards for Excellence" are given to highly promising products of the year, and this year were awarded to nine separate products.

Comments from the Award Winners
SHIN: SANGOKUMUSOU 3
(KOEI Co.,Ltd.)
I deeply appreciate the support we have received from the fans of our "SHIN: SANGOKUMUSOU 3" series. We will do our best to continue to create games of a quality which users have come to expect from us. I really want to express our most sincere gratitude. Thank you very much.
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: THE WIND WAKER (Nintendo Co.,Ltd.)
Ever since ZELDA's transformation into a 3D format, we have been lucky enough to win a CESA award for it every year. We are extremely grateful that it has been awarded again this year too. In the latest version we employed a new technique called 'two-shading' with the hope of creating a ZELDA which would consistently surprise and delight users. The next ZELDA is already in the development stage. We look forward to presenting it to you in the near future. Thank you very much.
TEKKI (CAPCOM CO., LTD.)
As I was aiming at trying to win the "Grand Award" itself, I feel a little disappointed at not being able to achieve this goal. I believe our product is very much a niche product, but because of the support we have received from our users, we have been fortunate enough to receive this award. Thank you very much.
 
.hack//Series (BANDAI CO.,LTD)
I very much appreciate the opportunity as the producer of this game to be the one to receive this prize. I live and work (away from Tokyo) in Hakata. So, when I first received the news about this award, I jumped for joy. I just felt that to be awarded this prize was such an honor. The ".hack//Series" has received significant support both from various sectors of the media as well as a great number of users. I really want to express our gratitude to everyone.
FINAL FANTASY X-2
(SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.)

I really want to thank you all for this award today. We are now developing the game's international version. It will be the final episode for X, entitled "Last Mission." Please look forward to its release.

 
HALO® (Microsoft Corporation)

The members of Bungie Studios are currently developing the next version of HALO® and as such are unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony today. It is an honor for us that this product has been so highly appraised and able to receive this award. On behalf of the company, I want to express our sincere gratitude. Thank you very much.

Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire
(The Pokémon Company)

Through a continuous process of trial and error we have been able to successfully develop the first version of Pokémon playable on Game Boy Advance machines. We are very glad the efforts made by all of the staff on this project have enabled us to be able to receive this award. Thank you very much.
 
MADE IN WARIO (Nintendo Co.,Ltd.)
I wish to thank you all very much for this award. As we considered "MADE IN WARIO" to be a very peculiar and unique game, none of the staff members expected to receive this award. We are both surprised and delighted at this result. All of the staff put a lot of enthusiasm into this project and worked on it with pleasure and excitement. Perhaps some of this enthusiasm and fun was able to be passed on to game's users through the game.
WORLD SOCCER WINNING ELEVEN 6 (KONAMI CORPORATION)
Next year will be the tenth anniversary of the first release from the "WINNING ELEVEN" series. One of our principles has been to create a game depicting simple and real-looking soccer, and we believe that this basic idea was a sound decision. We want to keep releasing new products onto the market to further stimulate not only the game industry but the soccer industry as well. We hope we can rely upon our fans' continued support.
   
 


Special Award

The "Special Award" is given to the title which receives a large number of votes from the public and is also deemed appropriate for the award by the Selection Committee.
This year's winning game was selected on the strong recommendation of each committee member for its highly perfected attributes such as impressive graphic imaging, high-speed actions and the quality of its unfolding storyline.

Thank you so much for such an honorable award. When I announced the news of this award to our staff, they showed surprise and seemed half in doubt that it could be true. It is a great souvenir to them for their efforts. Thank you very much.



Global Award

The "Global Award" is presented for both the Japanese title and foreign title most highly appraised overseas.
This year's Global Award for the most highly appraised foreign title goes to "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City." Regretfully, no one from its development team was able to attend the ceremony to receive the award in person.

KINGDOM HEARTS
(SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.)

Thank you very much for presenting us with this special award. Although "KINGDOM HEARTS" has already gained considerable popularity in Japan, the product has an even larger following in the US and Europe where we still receive warm words of appreciation from the game's fans. At present, we are actively developing sequels to this game to be released next year. We hope we can continue to receive everyone's generous support.



Best Sales Award

The "Best Sales Award" is presented to the best-selling title sold in Japan during a specified period.
This year's award goes to "Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire", which achieved sales of four million units during the specified period. It grew to be a mega-hit product with domestic shipments of over five million units by the end of October 2003.

It is our pleasure as a developer to be able to receive the "Best Sales Award". It brings us great joy to know that such a large number of people take pleasure in enjoying this game. This latest Pokémon title was designed essentially to take communication between players into account. The concept that the game can be enjoyed by two players or more simultaneously rather than just a lone player may have lead to its broad sales success. We intend to keep developing excellent products for greater numbers of users to enjoy.



Grand Award

The "Grand Award" is presented to the product which receives a high number of popular votes from users and is evaluated as the best game of the year by the Selection Committee. This year, for the first time in the seven-year history of the CESA award system, the selection committee has decided to award the prize to two separate titles simultaneously.
The Selection Committee decided to present the award to both titles in recognition of each game's contribution to the introduction of new users to gaming, thus having a positive effect on the gaming industry, as well as opening up the door to the new age of broadband-oriented on-line games for household use.

FINAL FANTASY XI (SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.)

We are very happy to receive this very honorable award. We started developing this game four years ago, and we are pleased to say that over-the-counter-sales of this title in the US, which has been our long time dream, happen to start today. We are deeply grateful to be able to receive this award on this memorable day. I would like to express our gratitude to each of the many developers as well as users who contributed to the creation of the world of FINAL FANTASY XI.

This product was able to be created by having been beaten around by a large number of customers. We would like to express our special thanks to our customers. This product has been the result of various efforts and hardships. The software, the controller etc. have all been realized though hard work and effort.
