Overview

Purpose

The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) has selected and awarded outstanding computer entertainment software products for all computer platforms including home video game consoles and personal computers since 1996 based on the spirit of "openness", "fairness" and "justness".

Considering computer entertainment software to be a cultural form, the event is held to contribute to its growth and also to vitalize the computer entertainment software industry. By encouraging voting by the public and publicizing nominated and awarded products, it is hoped that the social recognition of the computer entertainment software industry will be expanded and advanced.

The Japan Game Awards holds a more open and significant awards program by presenting awards for both "titles" and "people." The three awards for "titles" are the "Games of the Year Division," for existing released titles, "Future Division" for unreleased titles, and "Amateur Division" for original works that have not been commercially marketed whether created by a juridical entity, organization, or individual. In addition, starting in 2010 the "Game Designers Award" for original, innovative, and creative titles that could become an indicator of future market development has been newly added to the "Games of the Year Division." In addition, with regard to the evaluation of "persons," from 2008 we plan to select and commend the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award(planned) for "persons" who have contributed to industrial development.

Discontinuation of Global Awards in the Game of the Year Division

The Global Awards has been presented to one work each from Japanese and foreign that have received the highest praise in overseas markets since 2003*.

It was established with the aim of introducing a variety of works that were highly evaluated overseas to Japanese game users, despite the limited information available about oversea markets at the time.

However, after 20 years since its establishment, due to advancements in hardware and the development of the internet, game users can now access information on a wide range of works from not only Japan but also overseas, to allow them having an environment to actually play the games.

As the gaming market has become borderless, the Global Awards have fulfilled its original purpose. We have decided that this role has been completed and will not be selected from 2023 onwards.

*Note: The Global Award was newly established from "CESA GAME AWARDS 2002-2003". It was announced on October 30, 2003, so it is listed as 2003.
