Overview
Purpose
The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) has selected and awarded outstanding computer entertainment software products for all computer platforms including home video game consoles and personal computers since 1996 based on the spirit of "openness", "fairness" and "justness".
Considering computer entertainment software to be a cultural form, the event is held to contribute to its growth and also to vitalize the computer entertainment software industry. By encouraging voting by the public and publicizing nominated and awarded products, it is hoped that the social recognition of the computer entertainment software industry will be expanded and advanced.
The Japan Game Awards are held as a "more open and meaningful award program" for the evaluation of "titles" and "people". For the evaluation of titles, we select and award in two divisions: "Games of the Year Division" for previously released titles and "Future Division" for unreleased titles.
In addition, since 2010, in the "Games of the Year Division" we have established the "Game Designers Award", which selects and commends unprecedented novel, innovative, and creative titles that will serve as an indicator of future market development.
Also, from 2024, we have newly established the "Breakthrough Award" to select and commend titles that have created new genres and gameplay that have never been seen before using original ideas and by taking on challenges, and the "Movement Award" to select and commend titles that have reached out to a wide range of people, including those who don't usually play games actively, and that made the memorable achievement of the year.
Further, for the evaluation of "people", since 2008 we have been selecting and awarding the "Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award" to people who have contributed to the development of the industry.
For the two divisions of "Amateur Division" and "U18 Division", we have inherited the contest "Kamigame Creator Evolution" sponsored by NHK Enterprises Inc. from 2024.
