The work sold 3.6 million titles on the day of release alone and as many as 6 million copies within a week since its release. “Grand Theft Auto IV” (hereafter GTA IV) is an innovative videogame pointing to the future of the entertainment software industry and is a work far surpassing existing major entertainment genres including movies both in topicality and sales results.
GTA IV was released on April 29, 2008 and sold 3.6 million titles only on the day of release. The sales in the first week reached as many as 6 million copies or 500 million dollars (approx. 52.5 billion yen). The total sales is certified by the Guinness Book of Records as breaking the all-time high record amongst all entertainment works including movies, music and literature. The long-awaited Japanese version was released by CAPCOM Co., Ltd. on Oct. 30, 2008 for Xbox360TM and PlayStation3TM to captivate Japanese fans.
GTA IV incorporates interaction with society and emotional elements which cannot be experienced in other games engrossing its players.
This work, which will provide quite innovative online play including multiple DLC episodes which are also to be delivered in Japan in the future, defines the next generation of action videogames and is the pinnacle piece of over 10 years of development of the series of Rockstar North.
