Mario Kart DS has been awarded for its major step forward, including excellent application of integrated online play to race against other players located all over the world.

"Mario Kart DS" is a new competitive racing game. Utilizing the DS wireless communication system, up to eight people can link up and race together. The software simply needs to be installed on one of the player's consoles, allowing the other seven to download and play it! If all players already have the software installed, they can enjoy an even more deluxe version of play.

The Nintendo-Wi-Fi Connection allows you to race against remote friends and even overseas rivals while staying at home. Besides competing against others, players can also enjoy the single-play modes "Grand Prix" and "Time Attack", as well as the new additional single-play mode "Mission Run" and racing against COM. In addition to the new items including "Gesso" and "Killer", players have a choice of 32 different race circuits. "Mario Kart DS" is fun to play either alone or with friends.

It was a big challenge for us to produce "Mario Kart DS" in a number of different ways. We had to make the characters and courses playable in 3D on a portable game machine. Another challenge, amongst others, was to maintain a 60-frames-per-second rate even when the game was being played between eight different DSs over the wireless communication system.
What we prioritized the most was network competition utilizing the Nintendo-Wi-Fi connection. Through the competition it allows between different players, Mario Kart has been able to further broaden the role of games as communication tools. Mario Kart has actually allowed competition between players in different parts of the world. We also were surprised at how enthusiastic the staff became about the game's competitive play and how much they enjoyed working on the game's development.
